Welcome to Active Travel Innovations 2025

This event will highlight the successful delivery of high quality and safe active travel infrastructure across the UK, and showcase the local authorities, consultants, charities, campaign groups, volunteers and academics delivering the schemes needed to make active travel part a key part of everyday lives.

Why now?

The upcoming Integrated National Transport Strategy will set out a single national vision that will "put people who use transport and their needs at its heart".

Active travel – walking, wheeling and cycling – is the foundation of a quality integrated transport network, but people will only consider travelling actively if it is convenient, easy and safe.

Active Travel Innovations is the event that focuses on the practical delivery of safe and attractive active travel schemes

A £291 million fund announced in February 2025 by Government and Active Travel England (ATE) will enable the construction of improved crossings and junctions and create 300 miles of new walkways and cycle lanes in England. The Scottish Government has confirmed the Active and Sustainable Travel budget at £188m for 2025-26, and the Active Travel Fund in Wales for 2025-26 has a total capital allocation of £50 million.

UK government authorities remain committed to boosting active travel. In England, that means ensuring that 50% of trips in towns and cities are walked, wheeled or cycled by 2030. Scotland says that by 2030 its communities will be shaped around people and place, enabling walking and cycling to be the most popular mode of travel for short, everyday journeys. Wales wishes to increase its active travel trip mode share to at least 35% by 2040.

“Walking and cycling is an affordable way to get around and is hugely beneficial for both mental and physical health. We’re making sure local authorities can deliver high-quality and easily accessible schemes for everyone.

“Investing in our national cycling and walking infrastructure is a key part our mission for growth and today’s investment will not only provide better connectivity, but boost local businesses, grow local economies and ease pressure on the NHS, helping us deliver our Plan for Change.”
